Like the Bella VoxBox, I occasionally get sent items to review from Influenster. A little over three weeks ago I received the Maybelline #BetterSkinChallenge Vox Box and was asked to review Maybelline’s Superstay Better Skin Foundation for 3 weeks. [Why three weeks? Well, the claim behind this foundation is that it will help improve your skin and complexion.] I decided to give it a go and accepted the challenge. Here’s what I thought about it…

First off, the foundation comes in 12 different shades and has a $9.99 price point. The packaging is pretty streamlined with a pump applicator, and I will say that I prefer foundations that come in square/rectangular containers because they’re easier to store and won’t roll all over the place if I store them on their side.

Here’s the schpeel from Maybelline:

Longwear foundation that improves skin’s appearance every minute you’re in it.
With the antioxidant power of Actyl-C, a more durable form of vitamin C.
For all skin types. Medium to full coverage.  Superstay Better Skin Foundation gives an all-day flawless coverage and better-looking skin in 3 weeks. The foundation reduces the appearance of spots, dullness and unevenness and gives you a brighter, more even and stress-free skin.

The shade I was sent was “Ivory.” Unfortunately it was a touch too light for me, even though I am a pale beast. Luckily, I could salvage it by adding a drop of my CoverFX Custom Color Drops in N20 to correct it. I was expecting it, honestly. I have a finicky skin-tone that seems to always be in between shades. C’est la vie. I do wish that the drugstore brands offered more diverse shade ranges… but doesn’t everyone?

Applying the foundation was pretty easy and the coverage was able to build if you needed a fuller coverage. The foundation can go from a medium to a full coverage depending on how heavy you apply it. I like to apply it with my Real Techniques sponge to get a flawless coverage without streaks or patches. I also purchased the companion concealer (Superstay Better Skin Concealer) that way I could give myself excess coverage over my under-eye area and on various spots. Also, if you are curious about the smell, it smells just like most other Maybelline foundations but it will go away after a few minutes upon applying it.

On the skin it looks great when you first apply it – and even for a few hours afterwards but once you hit the 4-5 hour mark something happens and it just seems to break down and settle in EVERY pore and line on your face and slip off of any area on your face that is prone to getting oily. No matter what primer I used it would always oxidize on me – which stinks. I know people who never have any foundation that oxidizes on them and it makes me jealous. The only foundations that I’ve found that don’t oxidize on me are CoverFX, Urban Decay Naked Skin, and MUFE Ultra HD.

For the first week I wore it almost every day, even if I wasn’t planning on wearing other makeup, just to see if the claims fit. What I noticed is while the foundation did seem to even out my face while it was on, I didn’t see any improvements to my skin… and it started to break me out. I will say that my face isn’t used to wearing foundation EVERY DAY, so that may be the culprit. Into week 2 and 3 I would wear it every other day or so, but I wouldn’t wear it exclusively just because I didn’t want to continue to break out. I can’t do makeup everyday because most of the time I don’t have the spoons for it so I do what I can.

Conclusion: To this day I haven’t really found any foundation that can improve my skin through “X” amount of weeks and this foundation is no different. It’s a good foundation for the price and for the coverage but it isn’t my favorite. I appreciate the opportunity to be able to give this foundation a go but aside from occasional use for photo shoots or something Halloween related where I won’t be wearing it a long time, I probably will just stick to my old standbys. The concealer that I purchased separately to use in conjunction with this foundation is actually pretty good and I would say that it is fairly similar to Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Concealer.

As stated at the beginning, I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. For more information on Influenster, head on over to
